Notes from Stansted

blog

The continuing transformation of Stansted is remarkable. Where once the idea was just to wait for your plane and maybe relieve your urges to micturate, drink, read, eat, and defecate, the only purpose appears to be maximum consumption.

There are hardly any places to wait that haven’t been co-opted by the restaurants and the cafes. It is a terminal situation, designed to keep you consuming and doing, not thinking and waiting quietly. There is also the phenomena of making security as onerous as possible. People are forced to take off their shoes, belts, and all personal items. We are herded into lines. It is remarkable, how easily we submit to the industrial dimensions of modern life.
